From our local bookshop, and a rare books seller in East Lothian.

I already have a fuller more original Scots play script for the 16th century play. But hoped that the slightly modernised/simplified version might be more suitable for my needs (including IF game design ...). Martin borrowed it for me from the uni library last week, and after a quick peek to be sure it was what I needed I could then confidently buy my own copy for longer-term use.

I love the Alice books. And collect playing cards. This is a new (last week) release of this deck. Plus a bonus fun book. We couldn't pick them up in person from the local bookshop on Friday - they needed to be ordered in. So I got them delivered, and they arrived in the post today.

Here's my final post of these for 2024. I intend to continue into 2025, though obviously resetting the count. I will also be posting my end of year full reading blog later this week, so probably into the start of 2025.

In this latest batch of newly finished books there were 3 rereads (the Sherlock Holmes, Discovery of Witches book 2, and The Dark is Rising). All great as always. The Wood at Midwinter and Booker-winner Orbital were reads for my book club. Both flawed, though I preferred the latter. Always Never was a graphic novel with gorgeous art but a somewhat troubling plot. The Alice in Wonderland gamebook was fun. And I'd never read the Tolkien Letters from Father Christmas book before, and loved it.

    earlier books )
  1. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
  2. Always Never by Jordi Lafebre (graphic novel)
  3. Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness
  4. The Wood at Midwinter by Susanna Clarke
  5. Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland by Jonathan Green (gamebook)
  6. Orbital by Samantha Harvey
  7. Letters from Father Christmas by JRR Tolkien
  8. The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

Finally finished playing Jonathan Green's gamebook Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland. Much fingers stuck in the pages, 80s style, this morning! Enjoyed reading to end, but scuppered by I think one unfair puzzle near the end. But extremely happy solved puzzle before! Very imaginative writing.

Currently listening to this one, the last story in season 5 of the Benny audios. And gobsmacked.

It's a totally bonkers adventure for Benny and Adrian. Truly bizarre in a theatrical and imaginative way. It reminds me of so many things e.g.
  • Blake's 7 TV episode "Gambit"
  • Alice in Wonderland
  • Doctor Who adventures with the Toymaker
  • The Prisoner TV series
  • MUD computer games
  • Tom Stoppard's play "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead"
There's very little logic to anything, though it does repeatedly argue for its own internal logic.

But it's utterly compelling to listen to.

Great music too! And extremely metatextual.

But yup, crikey. Highly recommended.

I do realise I've written very little about what it's about. But going in unprepared is probably for the best.

Just ordered the second thing with my IFComp prize money. Our local bookshop is stocking this. Newly published next week. I will report back what it's like. Still have some IFComp prize money left.
