Many thanks! The book I've got is all Lewis Carroll originals, which was a big draw for me. But I am more widely interested in similarly inspired stuff too.

What do you reckon is the first age to best encounter Alice?

I think that age has gone up over time, as younger readers now need a cultural context for it.

I'm not sure older children would have much more of a cultural context for it. If I was to guess an age now I'd say about 10. But younger might work too.
