vivdunstan: Test card (tv)
Finally starting our annual rewatch. The remastered Bluray arrived this afternoon. We’re going to slowly rewatch the six episodes over the coming weeks (we would normally have started 8 days ago) and save the 100+ minute new documentary for just before Christmas. First impressions from the remaster are good. Much is still relatively soft in appearance, but there’s a limit to what they could do with the original filming stock. But many moments now pop out of the screen. Very happy viewers in this house 🙂

Just ordered me some goodies from RedBubble, where an artist - and member of the Box of Delights online fan community - has been creating art for the 40th anniversary celebrations. I have managed to resist getting a framed wall print. We already have too many pictures waiting to go up on the walls! But I might have ordered a fridge magnet, two designs of coasters, some stickers and a large fleece throw 😜 Really looking forward to getting this package!

I also have a new and expanded version of Philip Errington’s companion book coming soon, and later in the month the remastered 40th anniversary Blu-ray produced by the BBC will be here.

vivdunstan: (oracle cards)
Back to the Urban Crow deck, and as usual my 3-card past/present/future spread.

Play / Anomaly / Anticipation.

There could be lots of interpretations of these cards. But looking at them I'm immediately reminded that I'm in a brief phase of slightly better health at the moment, and about to go very very downhill again in a few weeks time. So I've been having fun, and trying to make the most of it. Albeit hampered by my failed experimental immunosuppression dose change from May. Which still needs a few weeks to resolve itself since the dose went back in September (it takes up to 12 weeks to show the full effects).

Admittedly I've had post Covid vaccine flares so many times (9/9, with my 10th Covid vaccine due in a couple of weeks) that it's hardly an "anomaly" in my life! But it is still phenomenally disrupting each time, very distressing, leaving me extra incapacitated with devastating increased neurological symptoms for 3 long months at a time. It's a never-ending rollercoaster. But not one I'm willing to get off. I want my vaccine protection too much, and severely immunosuppressed me really needs it to get through Covid ok. Which we keep catching.

On plus I've got Christmas looming in the next few months, and that's what the last card today shouts out to me. I am not religious - was brought up vaguely Church of Scotland, but I've been agnostic for many years. I take after my Dad re this. However I love the mid winter festival that is Christmas, and the sense of snuggling down, in the warmth, with good food, and celebrations. So that's something to look forward to. Even if I will still be neurologically flaring very badly then.

This year we can also look forward to our annual pre-Christmas rewatch of 1984's TV Box of Delights being the new next month Blu-ray remastered version. So that will be a treat to carry us through to Christmas too.

OMG! The 1984 BBC version of "The Box of Delights" is coming out on Blu-ray in November! Including new special features, such as "Time And Tide – Making The Box of Delights". We rewatch this series every year in the run up to Christmas!

vivdunstan: the Blake's 7 logo from the TV series (blakes 7)
Oooooh! Blake’s 7 is coming to Blu-ray, with digitally remastered episodes and new bonus content. In the same style as the Classic Doctor Who series Collection Blu-ray boxes. Series 1 is released in November. I’ve just preordered it.

vivdunstan: Some of my Doctor Who etc books (drwho)
I was just clearing out some more space around my computer/desk in the study, to help when we switch soon to fibre. Has to make it easier to physically access the router and swap to the new one!

In the process I found a whole bunch more of Jago & Litefoot audio boxsets that I have, a spin off series from Big Finish telling more stories with those memorable characters from Doctor Who's story The Talons of Weng-Chiang. I've enjoyed listening to the Jago & Litefoot stories on my iPad, using the Big Finish download option. But can now sell on the CDs. Most are still as new and sealed. Oxfam sell these well on their shop website.

I have sold some Jago & Litefoot boxes myself on eBay in the past, but in this case would rather donate them to charity. Oxfam sell them secondhand by mail order for more money than I would get (based on past experience, and their use of fixed price offers they can hold until sold), and given how ill I am now I really don't want to deal with these chunky packaging tasks.

I also have some more Doctor Who DVDs to donate to them, after getting more of the season-long "Collection" Blu-Ray boxes (I am getting all of the Tom Baker era ones through to Sylvester McCoy). And as always we keep having books to pass on. Oxfam recently sold a hardback copy of Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey that I donated for £19.99. That's grand.

In the clearing out I also rediscovered my boxset of The Sarah Jane Adventures audio stories. I need to prioritise listening to those! Definitely not selling on that box though.
vivdunstan: Scene from The Greatest Enemy episode of Robin of Sherwood (robin of sherwood)
I thought it might be nice to do a series of blog posts about fandoms I engaged with at a very early stage. I was born in the early 1970s, so as a youngster particularly enjoyed TV from the late 1970s through to the early 1990s.

First up it's Robin of Sherwood, the ITV version of the legend that aired from 1984-1986. I loved this: an intoxicating mix of myth, folklore, magic, action and romance. All in gorgeous countryside too. And made even better with a soundtrack by Irish folk group Clannad. Just fab stuff. Though I'm very much more of a fan of the first Robin incarnation played by Michael Praed. I struggled when Jason Connery took over. It was rather similar to how I felt when Romana regenerated in Doctor Who, even if I did get used to it.

In terms of organised fandom I was a member of Forest, a Robin of Sherwood fan club based in Glasgow, Scotland, that existed from 1986-1988. I never attended any events in person, but got a regular fanzine through the post. I also entered their competitions, and won a script from "The Swords of Wayland", signed by series creator and writer Richard Carpenter. My original prize went missing in the post, but when I queried it later Richard (or "Kip") sent me a replacement himself.

It was many years before I saw Robin of Sherwood again after the series ended. I am part way through a rewatch again now (it's on Britbox, and there is a Blu-ray release). It's still magic. The best TV or film version of the Robin Hood legend for me. And absolutely a product of the 1980s.

vivdunstan: Space station Babylon 5 against a dark starry background (babylon 5)
Continuing on with our weekly rewatch, and tonight this telepath heavy story. Which was very enjoyable. Though also made me think of how much more I enjoyed it than the more clumsily handled IMHO later telepath stuff in season 5. Though perhaps not having the overwrought Byron helped … Also further nice development of Sheridan and Ivanova’s working relationship, and big moves in Sheridan and Delenn. Of course Ivanova and Talia also start properly here, though that’s going to be sidetracked soon. And thinking about that retrospectively at this point you do have to wonder how all the different elements of Talia’s psyche managed to co exist.

I now want next week’s episode now, but will wait a week. It is my all time favourite B5 episode.

P.S. The complete series Blu-ray box is on the way to us. It was supposed to come today (to a nearby locker) but there's been a slip-up in today's delivery. But we should hopefully have it soon. We are currently watching via streaming though, the remastered versions. But I still want the Blu-ray box. Even if, annoyingly, it doesn't have the space station in the cover image.
