vivdunstan: Photo of some of my books (books)
I haven’t finished a book for over a month, though hope to wrap up some novels on my Kindle this coming week. Tonight though I pulled out a manga I’ve got to read. The first volume of Delicious in Dungeon, where the adventurers eat their way through the dungeon. I think this has been made into an anime TV series. Refreshingly there is no “turn to the back!” or a visual how to read manga panels in sequence guide. It’s just straight in. The page layouts are pretty straightforward though. So even I’m not confused for once.

This shows a dungeoneer in armour at the fron holding a fry an pan and spatula. Behind him, deeper in the dungeon, are his fellow adventurers. And in the distance a red dragon watches.

More SHARP

Two more SHARP book history conference panel recordings watched. The first discussing special collections and book history teaching. Including cook book collections. Also a quite gobsmacking talk where the class was given a budget to buy things to add to the special collections - e.g. from rare book dealers etc. - and the students chose candidates and voted on what would be bought. I couldn't see that happening in many universities over here for obvious reasons! The other panel I watched was about Dickens and his readers and manuscripts. The first was a really interesting account of his reception in Australia and New Zealand in the 19th and early 20th centuries. And then a talk about how Dickens prepared his manuscripts for compositors. Which should have had illustrations of the manuscripts, but they were having huge technical difficulties. Despite that the speaker communicated the key issues well. So good stuff. I will be watching more SHARP panels later this week. I can watch the recordings until the end of August.

Popadoms

Today’s life hack, another trick learned from Jamie Oliver, was microwaving popadoms. I got a pack in of about 40 ready to cook ones, made in India. Will keep well in the cupboard till needed. And just now tried zapping them in the microwave. Really works, mesmeric to watch the bubbles appear! I stacked 1 or 2 popadoms at a time around the inside of a bowl. 70 seconds on 1000W did 1, 120 seconds for 2. Dry, tasty and as healthy as a popadom can ever be. I had to taste test the results, as did Martin, but we have some still cooked for our curry dinner tonight. Yum.
