Casanova

Rewatching Casanova (2005) and boggling at how many of the actors later appeared in Doctor Who too. Plus David Tennant just said “Somebody said you need a Doctor?” And yes, the character is written very much like the Tenth Doctor. And acted that way too.

Over the last few weeks we have been rewatching the BBC’s 1999 TV version of Elizabeth Gaskell’s unfinished novel Wives and Daughters. Really good book, well adapted. Martin is watching it as if for the first time - he can’t remember anything of the 1999 previous watch. Michael Gambon was incredibly strong in tonight’s episode. I was also amusing myself by spotting actors who’d been in Doctor Who too.

Next up on our rewatch is probably going to be the 2005 David Tennant / RTD version of Casanova. Well I say rewatch. It will be for me. Martin hasn’t seen it! We have it in digital form from iTunes which is 2 x 90 ish minute episodes. I think I can probably manage those this weekend and next, before my 7th Covid vaccine triggers probably a terrible neurological flare, wiping me out again. I remember Murray Gold’s music being gorgeous in it. But never released separately I think. Like Doctor Who New Series 10 still - grumble grumble.

Very sad to see this, but not surprised given Netflix’s propensity for cancelling things. I’ll just have to read all the books! Tagging [personal profile] a_cubed

Rather mixed views about the finale and the programme overall. The finale wasn't as strong as I expected, and also hampered by being very dark (gloomy, poor lighting) for so much. I could barely see what was happening! And I've never been a big fan of the big fight scenes in this series. However I liked Layla becoming a (temporary) avatar, and having more agency. And I was pleased how it left things open for the possibility of more stories. But I really dislike Khonshu. Maybe I'm meant to, but I'd get exasperated whenever he appeared. And Harrow wasn't convincing for me either. This sounds quite moany, but I did enjoy a lot of the series. But the pacing was inconsistent, often either too slow, or as in the finale over too easily. I do intend to go back into the Moon Knight comics though - I have a Marvel Unlimited subscription, so can easily access the old issues on my iPad. I would definitely watch a second series if they made one. But yes I had issues.

vivdunstan: Space station Babylon 5 against a dark starry background (babylon 5)
Continuing our Babylon 5 TV series rewatch, with episode 2. Martin didn’t know the episode title but from the action near the start was a bit stunned. “That happens this early?!” Because season 1 was quite choppy, but it did get on with arc plot. And is already showing really strong signs. Oh and I loved seeing the introduction of Dr Franklin.

Watched the final episode tonight. What I'm about to write is very spoiler full, so putting in a cut section.

Today is 30 years since the original airing in the US of The Gathering TV movie. I can’t remember when it aired first in the UK. We tended to be behind though. And the series itself was a year or so later. I got hooked quicker than Martin. He was away for much of the first season doing a conversion degree in Edinburgh, staying for some of each week there. But we were both hooked by the end of season 1. And loved the rest. We’ve rewatched it fully several times since. We are due another rewatch I think, and have the remastered digital versions. It’s funny I’m such a big fan. Despite adoring Doctor Who and enjoying Star Trek and Blake’s 7 I am not a natural fan of space set scifi. Me and scifi have a bit of a difficult relationship. I much prefer fantasy. But I really like good storytelling. And Babylon 5 is as much about storytelling and characters as it is a space show.

CSI: Vegas

Finally starting to watch CSI: Vegas, the new version. Our Sky box recorded series 1 and is now well through recording series 2. But belatedly getting to it from the start! We used to love watching original CSI. The new team is intriguing plus of course there are old faces back. I think the only thing we’ve seen the new British CSI person in is the most recent Red Dwarf, as a cat person, but yup, intrigued.

After finishing Rings of Power last weekend we can start watching another series, an episode a week if we are lucky, and my health permitting. Next up is The Devil’s Hour, starring Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi. Looking forward to this one.

Really enjoyed the final episode of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Though my previous concerns about the series continue, I’m glad we stuck with it. I do hope the programme makers balance things better in the second series though, especially the pacing. But yup, good finale.

Nearing the end of our Rings of Power watch, which we are enjoying, but I don’t think I’d have stuck with without the wider Middle Earth context. The pace is too slow at times (including in this episode 7!) and there are too many separate strands. But some of the acting is great, much looks glorious, and it was really nice to see Numenor on screen. I am very much looking forward to the final episode though.

Enjoyed that, though the pacing was too slow at times. Oscar Isaac was superb.

Amazed how much of this I can't remember, including the whole weather sequence. I was also rather blown away by the sizzling scene between the Doctor and Rosanna, which was especially striking given how youthful Matt Smith was at this time. But still effortlessly ageless. The substitute Venice filming works quite well, but you can see where they are reducing the visuals a lot in scale to make things work. Oh and what a lot of chickens.

We've just rewatched "The Christmas Invasion" again from 2005. And for the first time I spotted that one of David Tennant's Casanova costumes appears in the outfit choosing scene. I watched Casanova just around the time David Tennant was being announced as the 10th Doctor. But only just noticed this! We may be watching Casanova over the coming weeks. Martin has never seen it, and I bought it at low cost on iTunes so we can watch it. Looking forward to it. And I will be pointing out costumes. I remember a conversation with my Dad who was very concerned that David Tennant might not be good in the role. This was before the Christmas special aired. I had seen Casanova, and said no need to worry, he would be fab.

Missing any new TV Doctor Who this festive season, but thinking of watching an old Christmas special tonight. Currently tossing up between The Snowmen and The Christmas Invasion. Probably going for the former. Many fans will be watching the other one tomorrow night in a mass tweet along. But I’m favouring the darker one.
vivdunstan: Test card (television)
On Thursday night we watched the latest Inside No. 9, "The Bones of St Nicholas". And on Friday night we watched the latest Mark Gatiss A Ghost Story for Christmas, with M.R. James's "Count Magnus".

Of the two the first was by far the more successful for me, with a constantly unsettling feel, and more than a few influences from one of my favourite horror films. All the guest cast were strong, but especially Simon Callow, who was extremely good in his role. Good stuff.

Count Magnus was enjoyable, with a largely Swedish and Finnish cast lending it much authenticity. But the lead character as depicted, played by Jason Watkins, was far too buffoonish throughout, which reduced a lot of the scary atmosphere that should have been there.
vivdunstan: Test card (tv)
Which we are both enjoying. But it’s fair to say the last two episodes have made me want to see a series solely telling the story of Numenor. And I’m not a huge fan of the often dark and gloomy scenes in the Southlands. Interesting storytelling, but so dark and gloomy I am peering at the telly, struggling to see the details. There is some very good acting in this though, which I definitely appreciate.
vivdunstan: Test card (television)
Binge watching a lot of telly tonight - we are not football fans, and never watch the games, even if Scotland was playing.

But I’m really pleased to have managed a lot of viewing tonight. Firstly finishing the second half of the a-ha documentary movie. Rather anguished throughout, but an interesting story and good music.

Followed by the utterly bizarre but charming musical Xanadu, with Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. And a lot of disco bling and roller skating! Utterly bonkers, but for children of the 80s very enjoyable.

And now onto episode 3 of the Rings of Power. It is nice to see a depiction of Numenor, even if I am still finding the chopping and changing between scenes rather uncomfortable.
