I’ve been looking forward to this episode again for weeks. And it didn’t disappoint. I’m going to put the detailed discussion in a spoiler cut. But it’s safe to say it’s my all time favourite B5 episode.
Watching it on a repeat (my 5th or 6th viewing now) it doesn’t have the same impact as at the first viewing. But it is still so very powerful. Like the best kind of Shakespearean tragedy, it also feels like a horrific slow motion car crash that you can’t drag your eyes away from. G’Kar is our gateway character, and the journey he goes through is agonising. Londo’s is less immediately painful, but more so with the benefit of hindsight. And thank goodness for Vir. Another comfort is Sheridan’s sense of right and wrong being apparent so early on, and the idea that Babylon 5 and its leaders are not going to stay impartial in the coming fight. On the downside unlike some other episodes the later part feels a little slow in places. Though as a set up for later it is undoubtedly effective. Looking forward to the rest of season 2 and also season 3, my two favourite years of the show. Bring it on.
