vivdunstan: Test card (tv)
Just binge watched - at a bit of speed in places! - the last 3 episodes of Wednesday season 1. Martin is also now watching it, though a bit behind me. It's been odd for him seeing snippets that he'd already seen me watching, and learning where they fit into the story! Anyway yes, I'm all watched up. He should be soon. A second season has already been filmed.

It's very much a teen drama, but I liked an awful lot about it. Especially the gothic feel. Jenna Ortega did a great job. I was also surprised just how dark the last few episodes were in terms of content. But yes, very much enjoyed, and looking forward to the second season.

On to the first in season 5 of Big Finish's Bernice Summerfield audios. And a rather unusual one, where at the start Benny's young son Peter activates Benny's time and space travelling rings, leading to a manic chase through strange times and places.

As with many Benny audios in this period this one calls back to old stories. The time rings that Peter uses to transport the group through time and space were a gift from the Seventh Doctor to Benny and Jason, in novel Happy Endings, and were also used as a plot element in a number of subsequent novels featuring Benny. Many of which were made into audios later by Big Finish.

But the story also calls back to the First Doctor TV story "The Chase". Which I haven't seen or heard, any more than I've read Happy Endings or read/heard the other time ring stories. There is even a Grel who seems to sound like William Hartnell's First Doctor early on in this audio, though I'm not sure if that was intentional! But at least I didn't need to know about the earlier TV story, even if it means I miss some of the connections.

It's a truly bizarre set of adventures, that's often extremely funny. The Grel chasing Benny and team are consistently good value on entertainment grounds. And the dialogue between Benny, Jason, their friend Sophia and robot assistant Joseph is also often laugh out loud hilarious.

Oh and I didn't previously know who the Grel were either - they first appeared in Doctor Who novel Oh No It Isn't, another Virgin New Adventures story Big Finish turned into an early Benny audio, that I haven't heard either! But the very useful Tardis Wiki told me probably all that I needed to know, with the description "Squid-like humanoid". And it was fine.

In a nutshell this was a lot of fun. It also creatively developed the ongoing story of Benny, young Peter and Jason. And I laughed a lot. Though I'm not a fan of the new Benny title music. The previous theme was much more fun. Also sounded a lot less like Space Invaders or Galaxian.

Continuing my Benny relisten/listen, and on to this one, where she's dealing with a new baby, and two wannabe dads: the baby's real dad Adrian, a Killoran wolf/ape-like person, and Jason, Benny's on-off human beau. It's complicated. Not least because the baby's birth was covered in a book, not in the ongoing audio series. The audio tries to recap what happened, but in a comedic split up way, that doesn't really work.

Comedy runs throughout the audio, with Benny constantly quipping her way through difficult situations, and the team up of rivals Adrian and Jason is not any less amusing. On the one hand it's an entertaining listen, and amusing. But I can't help but feel disturbed how the deeper issues are often being ignored, not least by Benny herself. Though, to be fair, Adrian and Jason have a very frank talk about 3/4 through.

Like many early Benny audios this has a very small cast, but it's well acted. And big highlight for me: Benny's spherical robot assistant Joseph is back again.

So fun, but perhaps too comedic for me this time.

Just got to this 2012 episode in my Matt Smith era rewatch. And crikey it's much better than I remembered! It starts with a bonkers Steven Moffat esque mass of different time settings / characters pulled from there. Though it's written by Chris Chibnall. Then it turns into a comedic but also very dark in places space set story. With dinosaurs. With the Doctor and pals riding on a dinosaur. Oh and Queen Nefertiti. I was stunned by the guest cast, especially David Bradley as the baddie, Mark Williams as Rory's dad Brian, and Rupert Graves (Lestrade in Sherlock). But also comedy duo Mitchell & Webb voicing the robots. Who were very, very funny, in a Hitchhikers-esque way. I did find some of the location work distracting: that beach has been used too often in the series, including this time reminding me most of The Time of Angels / Flesh and Stone. But that's a minor quibble. This was a bonkers concept, packed full of stuff, balancing light and dark elements, and just very well done. I remember Chris Chibnall's episode a couple on from here also being a strong one - the one that introduced Kate Stewart. What happened later?! Was it just that he had really good characters to write for here? Baffling. But this was good.

Delighted that my favourite game in this year’s very strong IFComp was the final winner. Dr Ludwig and the Devil is like a comic Hammer horror film in parser game form. The results were just announced in a Twitch livestream and the full final ranking will be on the competition website soon https://ifcomp.org It was an incredibly strong year for the competition, and all the entrants should be very proud of themselves.
vivdunstan: Photo of some of my books (books)
Just read and greatly enjoyed this 1967 sci-fi / historical fiction book. It sees a bunch of movie makers team up with a scientist with a time machine, and go back to Viking era Orkney Islands, to fill a Viking movie, with real historical locations, and real life historical Vikings. The concept is absolutely bonkers. The execution is brilliant. I laughed so much throughout. The historian in me also adored how they played with the recorded history, and the role of historical sagas recurring through the story. It's just a blast. If you like time travelling stories with a comic twist check this one out. Utterly bonkers. I'm so glad I read it.

This shows a Viking era long boat, with bright red and green sails, along with a bunch of movie makers (at least director and cameraman) perched in the boat, filming
