Booked myself in for the Tolkien Society conference Oxonmoot in 2023. It can be attended in person or online & I’ve attended online since that was offered in 2020. Works brilliantly. I usually watch later on catchup. Discount rate available till February. https://www.tolkiensociety.org/events/oxonmoot-2023/

Which we are both enjoying. But it’s fair to say the last two episodes have made me want to see a series solely telling the story of Numenor. And I’m not a huge fan of the often dark and gloomy scenes in the Southlands. Interesting storytelling, but so dark and gloomy I am peering at the telly, struggling to see the details. There is some very good acting in this though, which I definitely appreciate.

Binge watching a lot of telly tonight - we are not football fans, and never watch the games, even if Scotland was playing.

But I’m really pleased to have managed a lot of viewing tonight. Firstly finishing the second half of the a-ha documentary movie. Rather anguished throughout, but an interesting story and good music.

Followed by the utterly bizarre but charming musical Xanadu, with Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly. And a lot of disco bling and roller skating! Utterly bonkers, but for children of the 80s very enjoyable.

And now onto episode 3 of the Rings of Power. It is nice to see a depiction of Numenor, even if I am still finding the chopping and changing between scenes rather uncomfortable.

Putting these into a spoiler section to be on the safe side. Though they should be safe for later episodes.

Spoilers for episode 2 )

Tonight we’re finally starting to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the TV series. We’ve had to wait until I’m awake enough to manage hour long episodes every week. Even then there may be interruptions. I’ve a rather fraught relationship with The Silmarillion. I first tried to read it aged 12 or 13, borrowing it from the town library in Hawick. And I found it impossible. I tried again more recently, but with my huge memory problems from my neurological disease it was a lost cause. The TV series doesn’t have the rights to that book, but it retells many of its stories, drawing largely on other versions that Tolkien wrote. I’m hoping it’s a bit more manageable for memory challenged me 😜 Even if I know they are doing some hefty reworkings / creative filling in places. But yup, starting watching tonight. As a Tolkien fan I’m viewing it as very expensive fanfic largely, but looking forward to enjoying as much as I can. Martin’s keen to watch it too.

Really pleased with the new Lord of the Rings Tarot deck that arrived today. Good thick card stock and gorgeous woodcut style designs. This isn’t something I’ve exactly got much practical use for. But as a Tolkien fan and appreciator of good design I’m delighted to have it.

I know I’m in a privileged position to be able to read for comfort at the moment. But it’s still a tricky choice. The Lord of the Rings is my favourite book series, but reading about a dark shadow reaching out from the east feels a bit close. I may go with classic children’s literature. Or possibly the Sherlock Holmes canon.
