Current reading, early October 2025 edition

Here's the screenshot from my Kindle, showing the main books I will be reading on there this month, with utterly gargantuan font etc. Some are already under way. Others like Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu are lined up for my book club later. My main novel read at the moment is Katabasis by RF Kuang, a dark academia book about a journey into Hell to rescue an academic advisor. Am really enjoying it. Last night I started my annual pre-Halloween reread of Roger Zelazny's A Night in the Lonesome October, which is a gothic horror delight. And I am going to try to read just a chapter a day this time! Liza Picard's Restoration London is a reread. Though she wasn't a formally trained historian I am in awe of her approach to the historical sources and questions. The Complete Kobold Guide to Game Design was a birthday present from Martin. Just getting into it now. And I continue my reread of the original Sherlock Holmes short stories, now well into the Return collection.

Started reading A Night in the Lonesome October to $OFFSPRING last night. She liked the fact it's told by a dog! Going to try to do the one chapter every day thing. I usually read a chapter only when I read to her, but I don't always read every night, so we might have to catch up some days to get it done by the end of the month.

Excellent! Martin gave a copy of the book a year or two ago to his boss, who’s been a fan of Roger Zelazny for many many decades, but didn’t know of this novel. More spreading the love!

I think I mentioned this a few years ago when you talked about it that I'd had a copy for years but not read this one. On the other hand, as I may have mentioned before, my favourite book of all time is Roger Zelazny's Lord of Light and I must have given away at least ten copies of that over the years, including the Japanese translation to both $WIFE (when she was $GIRLFRIEND) and $MOTHER-IN-LAW (after she became that - she has some interest in SFF fiction, but mostly because she was a very mature student in Buddhist Studies after retiring, so I thought she'd really appreciate it).
