Been pondering adding a "Now" page to my personal website, to note my main focuses in a given period. Here's a link to the website describing the concept. But having thought more I'm thinking I won't. As a female I often have disturbing interactions with folk (usually male!) online, and I'm wary of how much info I put out there. I could easily do to trim it back. But adding a "Now" page feels like a step too far. Had fun browsing the sample "Now" pages linked from the site though, looking at those of Scottish folk. Who are almost entirely male ...

Date: 2025-01-06 06:59 pm (UTC)They mostly felt very typical of the 21st century tone of commercial copy where people try to sound personal and individual while also conforming to the accepted cluster of professional words and interests. But I did like the self-description of one woman from the Netherlands: "Queer Catholic facilitator and UX strategist". That did make me stop and read more!
I've had a LinkedIn page for a few years under my real name and it still makes me uncomfortable to know so much of my personal info is up there and available to anyone with a LI account. Would never put a profile picture up. One hears so many horrible stories.

Date: 2025-01-07 03:37 pm (UTC)Because I'm still trying to function as an independent academic it's helpful to have my own personal website (https://vivdunstan.co.uk) which is almost like a storefront for me. But it is quite static, and doesn't need updating very much. Which is a good thing overall. That's where I would have put the "now" page, but am very happy now thinking that's a bad idea :)
