Jotting down some quick thoughts, after my latest rewatch.
As a final Doctor / regeneration story this is an important one. And there is much to like. I especially appreciated the emotional scenes between Clara and the Doctor, which were phenomenally well acted. And this was another good piece of writing for Clara, of course superbly acted by Jenna Coleman. Her Clara has much in common with Lis Sladen's Sarah, not just in looks, but also in closeness with the Doctor, and strength of character.
Many past plot elements are drawn together here, including the Silence, the origin of Madame Kovarian's plan, and the significance of Trenzalore. But it does feel overly stuffed at times. Including with just about every baddie that you could think of. I could also do without yet more Nick Briggs' loud Dalek shouting ...
It also feels overly long. And repetitive in places. Yes the Doctor waits on Trenzalore for hundreds of years. But as a viewer I don't want to feel too drawn out on watching. Clara is sent home in the TARDIS first once, and then again. This repetition felt too much for this viewer.
Christmas is a quaint town, but incredibly twee, and I bored of it remarkably quickly. Everyone is so nice. Is there no sense of jeopardy from within or tension? It's almost too perfect.
Tasha Lem was a much more interesting character, and I was sad again when it was revealed she'd died and had been Dalek-converted. Though she fought back, and was still fighting when we last saw her. I would have liked to have had more of her past history with the Doctor shown in other stories. But she certainly made an impact.
Of course everything leads up to the regeneration. Even this is slow to happen. I like the scenes in the TARDIS where Matt Smith's Doctor sees young Amelia and grown up Amy. His final words are also very moving. But it feels like it takes a very long time to get there. Nice music though.
And then we're on to Peter Capaldi's version of the Doctor. Who will make an incredible pairing with Clara. But first there is an extremely extended teething stage to get through ...
