I have a certain fondness for seagulls in all their mad clowning cackling ways in the concourse, and their transformation into white still ghosts in the sky.
But I know that a lot of the public disagrees with me, as happens often (see also me and grey squirrels, crows, etc)
Here in Dundee it’s best just to accept them, and take evasive action where necessary. Better than getting wound up by them :) My icon on this post was from a friend of a warning sign at a castle in Wales. But the picture of dive bombing birds was perfect for a Dundee icon for me!
We have a large and lively population of seagulls in Swansea, but I remember the ones in eastern Scotland, where I went to university, being more bold and aggressive with humans. The Swansea ones seem very wrapped up in their own internal seagull politics. ("You think that's YOUR chip? Oh yeah? Well whose chip is it now?" *squawk* *wing buffet*)
Mind you, a seagull on the north Welsh coast did once try to carry off my mother's crab sandwich while she was still eating it.
Oh and both my husband and I like to see grey squirrels. He often photographs them. We are near to the red/grey boundary here, but usually see greys on this side of the city. I do sometimes get nasty comments from other people about the pictures though. Which I think is sad.
I can get that thinks might be tenser than elsewhere through living in a squirrel border country.
Here the reds are long gone, and I sometimes feed the greys brazil nuts and no one complains. One especially I liked -- it used to put one paw very gently on my index finger as it took a nut. Think it must have been to some kind of highly exclusive rodent finishing school.
