Some belated reading with Murray Pittock's groundbreaking "The Myth of the Jacobite Clans". I'm especially interested in evidence from the localities, and the Lowland components of Jacobitism. Also nice to see my history PhD supervisor's work cited and praised. I need to read his relevant book too!

I'm pretty sure the skin and clothes in that cover image are part of the myth. Way too clean for soldiers about to engage in battle in that period.

Yup, it's an image that raises loads of questions. And in itself a rather curious choice, given the central arguments of the book. This image just appears on the second edition. The first edition of the book looked very different.
