Book 25 of 2022
May. 3rd, 2022 11:43 amI’ve just finished Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey, the first in the Expanse series of scifi novels.
At one point I didn’t think I was going to finish it. The author is a pseudonym for a pair of authors, who split the book rigidly into alternating point of view chapters. And I really struggled with the writing style of one of the authors. My working assumption is one author took half the chapters and a single POV, and the other author did the other chapters/POV.
On plus it is an epic space story, revolving around an intriguing mystery, and with good world building. I liked the characters and overall plot. But I struggled hugely with half the chapters.
It is the first in a series, and I’ve heard that later books are more smoothly written. But I’m not encouraged to continue, and will be stopping for now. I am glad I read it, but it wasn’t for me. Sadly I’m too heavily sedated with very little awake time to watch the TV series, which I believe also smooths out some of the issues, as well as addressing other things like increased representation of female characters.
Rating 2/5 from me.
