Eve of the Daleks

Finally watched the New Year 2022 Doctor Who special. I already knew it was a tight plot, but at an hour long given how heavily sedated I’ve been recently we couldn’t watch it until now. Even then I was struggling to keep concentrating throughout, and referring to a Doctor Who fandom wiki to help encourage me re time left!

I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a very good time loop plot, almost an equivalent of a classic locked room murder mystery. I did think the pacing sagged in places, where it got too talky, even preachy at times. I think it could have been trimmed to a more effective 45 minutes.

It wasn’t Dan’s place to reveal Yaz’s feelings to the Doctor. I also had some issues with the Sarah/Nick romance, though was willing to cut it some slack. The guest cast were excellent.

I laughed far too much at “I am not Nick”. As a Big Finish listener his voice is so ubiquitous, whether a Dalek or not.

I also laughed at “Good hearted weirdos are keepers”.

Oh and there felt like strong echoes of Rob Shearman’s Chimes of Midnight early on. Which is a good thing.
