Books finished in August 2012

vivdunstanI've finished very few books this month. I've been extremely weak for much of the time, due to the warmer weather which makes my MS-like illness worse. And I've a final chemotherapy infusion tomorrow, so I'm not going to finish any more this month. So might as well blog now.
First book finished was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, the first book in the series. I first read this decades ago, and having recently seen the theatre version of the radio show / books the story was really familiar. But still excellent. I laugh a lot when I read these books. I look forward to rereading the others later.
The Chestnut Soldier is the final story in the Snow Spider trilogy of books by Jenny Nimmo. I enjoyed this. In some ways it was the more adult of the books, with lots of issues related to growing up and relationships. But there was still a strong magical element and the lingering effects of myth. Good stuff.
Finally I finished The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman. I tried to read this a couple of years ago, and got halfway through, up to Auschwitz, and couldn't bear any more. Because it was chosen for the Yog-Sothoth.com book club that I've newly joined I tried again, rereading the first half, and carrying on. It's a tough read, a really tough read, but I'm glad I read it. I think this is one of the most important graphic novels ever, and it tells a true-life story of survival through the Holocaust making powerful use of the graphic medium. I'm very doubtful that it would have worked as well in prose. But I don't think I'll be rereading it. I have MetaMaus to read next, which is the behind-the-scenes story of the creation of Maus, with lots of interviews with the artist. That should be rewarding.
I'm now reading Doctor Who: Dark Horizons by Jenny Colgan, and will afterwards be reading If on a Winter's Night a Traveller by Italo Calvino, my choice for the next read for the Yoggie book club. It's a book I've wanted to read for some time, and it should be interesting.
