Book 37 of 2022
Jun. 27th, 2022 05:11 pmLast night I finished two books, including Maskerade by Terry Pratchett.
This is the 18th book in the Discworld series and the 5th book in the Witches sub series of that.
It is a Discworld spin on Phantom of the Opera, with reluctant could-be-witch Agnes off to Ankh-Morpork to become an opera singer. Closely pursued by witches Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg. And cat Greebo.
I found it rather slow to start, although the concept was superb. So I’m going to knock a point off for that. However once it got going it was glorious. So many in jokes for fans of the Phantom musical in particular. And I think this might be the very best appearance in print by Granny and Nanny who both positively shine here.
This book doesn’t rely on past knowledge of the Discworld series and could be read and enjoyed by anyone open to comic fantasy. I especially recommend it to anyone with a soft spot for the Phantom musical. Just beware it may take a little while to get going. But oh when it does ...
Rating 4/5.
