Book 17 of 2023: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Just finished this, the first in a YA book series I've never read. I liked a lot about it, including the Greek myth elements. I especially liked it when they interacted with the everyday world in fantastic ways. That felt reminiscent of Neil Gaiman's American Gods, both in terms of the godlike elements, and the downright bizarreness. I wasn't so keen on the summer camp for the kids, and much of the book's plot felt predictable, including big twists. I may read more of the series, but am not sure. It does feel very reminiscent of Harry Potter.

Current reading: next novel

Before I get back to the Wheel of Time I want to read more short books. I considered several options just now - I have a huge backlog of Kindle books, many ones that I wanted that had plunged dramatically in price so I snapped them up for later. I have settled on the Penguin Classics edition of Alexandre Dumas's The Black Tulip, set in 17th century Holland at the time of "Tulipmania". It's a short read but looks fun, and I've greatly enjoyed other books by him in modern translations. Here's what the book cover looks like.

Current reading: next graphic novel

Firing up my next graphic novel read. A reread, this time reading it and the sequel on my iPad.
