Doctor Who: The Robot Revolution thoughts
Joining down some quick thoughts. These are restricted to just this episode, and don't discuss spoilers for later in the run.
So, a new series. Whoooo! And a new friend for the Doctor to meet.
On plus Varada Sethu is a natural in the role, and Belinda is very well written. It's nice to have a grown up companion again, and nice to have almost Tegan levels of distrust along with spunk.
A particular highlight for me was Mrs Flood again as a next door neighbour. I laughed a lot at her final line.
And though this isn't a spoiler for the future, I did recognise a Holby City actress appearing again (the hospital receptionist) that we saw back in The Church on Ruby Road. Erm ... ??
It was nice to see a scifi story. Though the robots felt clunky and not in a good way. And the inhabitants of the planet were largely anonymous. Not sure we really needed arm candy guy.
Things felt very Sarah Jane Adventures like, if you add gruesome deaths.
And on that subject ...
Big downside for me: what happened to the cat. This is not going down well with many folks on Gallifrey Base either. It seemed really misjudged. I'm surprised someone senior on the production team didn't veto it.
And the controlling boyfriend and incel-esque plot felt clumsily handed. We barely met Alan - it all needed more build up. Actually the whole thing felt under developed in many ways. Not that I necessarily wanted a two parter, but something more.
So some mixed thoughts. But very encouraged by the new pairing.
